How Long will Dental Bonding Last?
The lifespan of dental bonding depends on a variety of factors, including the location of the tooth and how well the patient cares for their teeth over an extended period of time. With that said, there are certain expectations that patients can have when it comes to how long dental bonding will last.
What to expect after dental bonding
Dental bonding is a great way to fix chips, cracks, teeth stains and gaps between teeth, and the material can last for years with proper daily oral care. The following is a review of what dental bonding is, how long it will last and how to properly care for dental bonding on a long-term basis.
Dental bonding explained
Dental bonding refers to the application of a tooth-colored material over a tooth or multiple teeth to fix minor imperfections. The process involves cleaning the dental enamel, strategically bonding the composite resin onto the tooth and curing the material with a special light. Bonding is often compared with veneers, although bonding is typically less invasive and more affordable than veneers treatment.
The lifespan of dental bonding
On average, dental bonding lasts between five and 10 years. The expected lifespan of dental bonding is rather broad because there are many factors that can affect it. Patients who care for their teeth properly (see below) see, on average, much better longevity from the bonding material. Other factors that may play a role in how long dental bonding lasts include the location of the tooth and the amount of bonding material that is applied.
How to make dental bonding last longer
Patients should practice good oral hygiene when trying to get the most out of the bonding material. This should include brushing, flossing and using mouthwash regularly. Additionally, protecting teeth from injury is also essential. Many who prematurely damage the bonding material get chips and cracks, which can occur due to a blow to the mouth, as a result of nighttime teeth grinding or by biting down on hard foods. Be sure to wear a mouthguard while playing contact sports, and talk to your dentist about bruxism treatment if grinding teeth at night is a concern.
When to see a dentist for dental bonding
Dental bonding can fix a range of dental appearance and oral health issues. Most notably, dentists often recommend dental bonding to fix the following concerns:
- Chips and cracks
- Severe teeth stains
- Short teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Misshapen teeth
Anyone who is not happy with their smile due to an imperfection or struggles with symptoms of an oral health concern due to tooth damage should talk to a dentist to determine if dental bonding is an appropriate treatment option.
